The global CNC machine market is expected to hit 100.9 billion by 2025. That's a lot of CNC machines and a lot of potential for businesses to increase efficiency. Here at SYIL, we've seen first-hand how CNC machines can help companies achieve greater efficiency.
James Cerven from Cerven Solutions improved efficiency in his business with the help of a SYIL CNC machine. When he upgraded to an X7, he increased productivity and efficiency in several ways.
If you want similar success in your business, consider these five ways a new CNC machine helped transform Cerven Solutions' operations.
Read on to see first-hand how James Cerven benefited from using a SYIL CNC machine to improve his business.
Meet Cerven Solutions
Cerven Solutions is a machining company based in Poughquag, New York. It specialises in CNC (computer numerical control) machining and has been in business since 2020. The company is owned and operated by James Cerven.
The company offers CNC machining services, 3D printing, and computer-aided design (CAD) to businesses in various industries. Cerven Solutions often provides quality machine work creating parts for labs, schools, aerospace, and medical companies.
1. Upgrading to a CNC Machine With More Features
James Cerven purchased the SYIL X7 in early 2022. He wanted to replace his Tormach PCNC 440 with something more robust and versatile. The SYIL machine has allowed Cerven to do CNC work that he otherwise would not have been able to do with his Tormach.
James first heard about the SYIL X7 through YouTube while researching different options. He narrowed his choices to the SYIL X7 and the Tormach 1100MX in his research. James decided on the SYIL X7 because it was more affordable and had more features than the Tormach.
In an interview with James, he stated that "Comparing the specs, the X7 blew the MX out of the water. Way faster, way more horsepower, way more rigid, and many more things. Once I made the comparison, it was an easy choice." - James Cerven
2. Robust Features at a Competitive Price
James' first impression of the X7 was that it was well built for the money.
"I was just shocked at how big it was. In the machine world, it is not big, but I was pretty surprised by its price. It was also pretty scary because the control was completely new. I was super happy though because right off the bat, it looked like a serious workhorse.." - James Cerven
At first, he and his team had some trouble with the documentation in setting it up. After some initial growing pains, they could get it running quickly. It now has a solid place in their garage and is responsible for much of Cerven's production.
3. Improved Speed and Efficiency
James has used the SYIL X7 to create a variety of parts for his customers. He has also used it to develop prototypes and one-off pieces for clients. He and his team have worked with copper, aluminium, brass, stainless steel, and plastics.
"Parts with +-.001" tolerances are definitely doable on the X7, as long as the work holding is good and the tooling is in good shape. We machine many micro-sized parts on the SYIL and use endmills ten thousandths in diameter. Having 12k rpm is nice because, for smaller diameter tools, I can run 20% faster than I used to be able to." - James Cerven
The SYIL X7 has allowed James to be more efficient in his work and helped him grow his business. With this new CNC machine upgrade, his facility has seen increased production speeds, reduced costs, and better precision and accuracy.
One of James' favourite things about his new SYIL CNC machine is its large coolant tank and strong coolant. The machine works well and looks more professional than his previous Tormach machine.
4. Improved Accuracy
James was impressed with the SYIL's accuracy. He noted that the machine is rigid and heavy, with thick casting. The vibration dampening is also top-notch, which helps create smooth finishes.
Another favorite feature was the linear rails on all axes. It allows for high speeds and accelerations without losing accuracy. The SYIL X7 has BT30 tooling, a 12,000rpm spindle, and an excellent coolant system.
5. Reliable Production
The team struggled to adjust to the new machine. Team members were accustomed to the user-friendly PathPilot, but they are getting used to the more complicated system controls. The team also had an issue with a leaking sealant, but they fixed it.
Cerven Solutions hasn't had any other significant issues with their new machine. They remain impressed and happy with their investment because the X7 is a hardy workhorse that has allowed them to create parts they otherwise wouldn't have been able to.
With a reliable machine, production processes have become more efficient with less downtime, increasing profits.
Advice From James Cerven for Those Looking to Buy a CNC Machine
Although James and his team love their new SYIL; their honest advice depends on what you're looking for.
If you are a beginner, you might choose the Tormach because it has a more straightforward setup. But, the SYIL is a better machine in terms of specs for the price. You might have trouble understanding the setup at first, but once you do, it is straightforward to use.
"One time, we accidentally took way too large of a cut in UHMW. It was a 2" deep slot with a ½" diameter endmill going 375 ipm. It instantly sounded horrible and chattered like crazy.
But the spindle has a vibration detector (or something like that) built into it, so the spindle shut off after a few seconds. I didn't even know that was a feature, but I was happy it did that, compared to running till it stalled." - James Cerven
James ultimately chose SYIL X7 because it is a powerhouse with excellent features. If you are looking for a machine to help you take your business to the next level, SYIL is a great choice.
